The first time I went to Ecuador, I searched numerous discount travel sites for the best deal on plane tickets. The cheapest round-trip tickets I found were $1750. Then I searched for Traverse City, Michigan, (where I lived) to Miami, and found a round trip ticket for $310. Miami to Quito, Ecuador was possible for $409. The total of the two: $719 - a savings of more than $1000!
The $1750 ticket transferred me in Miami anyhow, so maybe I'd even be on the exact same airplanes. You may not be entitled to a refund on the second flight if you miss it, so be sure to plan on lots of time between the two if you try this. You can afford to spend the afternoon in the airport for $1000, right?
Want to go even cheaper? I finally decided to take the Greyhound bus to Miami instead of a plane. It cost me $158 round trip.
Want even cheaper plane tickets? I paid $256 from Miami to Quito and back, by agreeing to take only carry-on luggage so I could sign for four suitcases full of car parts. If you are interested in how to get in on these deals, you can read more on my site; http://www.EverythingAboutTravel.com .
Cheapest airfare on the discount sites: $1750. My total round-trip cost: $414. A savings of $1336!!!
Use Google and get specific. Don't search "plane tickets." Search "cheap plane tickets Italy", for example. Bookmark several sites, so you can compare them carefully.
When using the discount search sites, try many options. Change the departure date if you can, or allow more connections, or "red-eye" flights. Little changes can save a lot. A 31-day trip may cost double what a 30-day trip costs, for example.
Ask everything, but don't ask why. Airfare is mysterious. Why is it sometimes cheaper to buy a round-trip
Be sure you know what you are getting. Some travel sites tell you very clearly the price including all taxes and fees. Others aren't so clear. Finally, plan far enough ahead to have time to search out the cheapest way. You'll find cheap plane tickets if you use these tips.
